Real-Life Online Reputation Management Example

While researching some link building properties, I stumbled upon a keyword that caught my attention:

Lindsay Rosenwald

After an additional 60 seconds of research I knew that this is a case of online reputation management.
Google his name and you’ll find the exact match .com, .net and .org on the first page along with his Wikipedia article and his advisory board profile on some EDU site:

http://www.lindsayrosenwald.net/
http://www.lindsayrosenwald.org/
http://www.lindsayrosenwald.biz/
http://www.lindsay-rosenwald.net/

These are all simple WordPress installs with a few articles. It’s pretty obvious they’re only here to occupy the first page on Google.
As soon as you dig deeper into the SERPs you’ll find tons – and I mean TONS – of web 2.0 properties linking and pushing his WordPress sites and the EDU profile among others.

and the list goes on…

Considering the sheer amount of properties Lindsay Rosenwald got built for himself it’s quite safe to state that he has paid a substantial sum of money for this online reputation management campaign. But that’s no big surprise taking into account that he was able to contribute more than $60,000 to the republicans in 2008 alone. It doesn’t end here, he paid $30 million for an 18th-floor duplex near the Central Park. There’s no doubt he’s got the pocket change to hire a whole army of SEO companies if he wants to.

Well, so what is he trying to bury in the world wide web? Since I’m not familiar with his person digging through the SERPs didn’t really reveal something on first sight.
So what other options do you have if you want to know what other people might search for? Correct, Google Suggest.

Bingo:

lindsay rosenwald madoff

10 seconds later I guess I had found what he’s trying to hide:

But by then, the Milken boys had scooted. Another top executive of D.H. Blair also avoided prosecution. His name was Lindsay Rosenwald.

Rosenwald was the third son-in-law of D.H. Blair’s founder, J. Morton Davis – the so-called “king of stock fraud.”

Rosenwald was also the third vice chairman and director of finance of D.H. Blair – that is, the third vice chairman of the dirtiest Mafia-affiliated brokerage on Wall Street.

And in March 2007, Rosenwald was the second of those seven “colorful” fund managers who were positioned to profit from the demise of Dendreon, a little company with a promising treatment for prostate cancer.

Lindsay Rosenwald may be the son-in-law of “the king of stock fraud.” And he was once the vice chairman of D.H. Blair, a firm affiliated with the Mafia – a firm that was run by two former top lieutenants of Michael Milken before it found itself at the center of one of the biggest Mafia investigations in the history of the FBI and on the business end of a 173-count federal indictment.

But never mind — Mr. Rosenwald is now a “prominent investor.” In fact, he is not just a “prominent investor”— he is one of America’s biggest biotech investors, if not the biggest biotech investor.

You can read the full article here, but be warned it’s lengthy! By the way, the article is ranking at #15 so I must have missed it on the first search.

While the reputation management campaign itself is already quite interesting, there’s no doubt that the real story behind Lindsay Rosenwald is even more intriguing! Have a good read!
